Using neuroplasticity to our greatest advantage

It is compelling to think of how our lives fall into place.

We wonder why or how we got so “lucky” to have met certain people and done certain things, and why at some times we get so “unlucky”. Growing up I always told myself that everything happens for a reason, and recently I have found that it really does. In many ways we control what happens to us, and we can in fact shape our own future. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne explains this phenomena otherwise known as “The Law of Attraction”. This is the idea that a person attracts what they think about. Philosophers, theorists, entrepreneurs and even neuroscientists in The Secret explain how altering our focus can truly alter our lives for the better. Once this book was released in 2006, the law of attraction concept exploded in the media and started to affect the lives of people all over the world. It became a lifestyle and even a religion for so many individuals.

How to become the calm after the storm

Adversity is a reality that all people must face, because the world is full of challenges that we cannot predict nor avoid.

No matter how dark truth may be, adversity can have more than one function: Not only can it create obstacles but it can also serve as a tremendous catalyst for growth. Resilience means turning tragedy into transcendence, and realizing strengths and talents you never knew existed. Tragedy and adversity does not have to knock you to the ground, but if it does, you don’t have to stay there. We can allow it to elevate us instead. Rather than getting stuck on “the ground” or in the slumps of our problems, resilience tells us to keep moving but how exactly does one become resilient?

The story of Elvis Summers’ Homes for the Homeless

When faced with the reality of homelessness, most people prefer to look away.

In California, where the homeless population has become a very visible issue, and despite all of the promises made by legislators to try and help them, it seems that nothing is truly done for them, and they are left to fend for themselves. Most people would not stir themselves to do anything for the homeless. Most people are not Elvis Summer.

The Qatari billionaire who embraced kindness

I first heard of Abdel Wassim El Whani when I stumbled across a video of him on YouTube giving away Lamborghini’s to strangers in the streets of Paris.

Abdel Wassim El Whani is a Qatari billionaire who enjoys sharing his wealth with others; after all, his fortune is something that only increases by the day. The videos I found left me simultaneously humored and in awe. “Is this guy for real?,”I thought to myself. I watched video after video, happy to know people like this still exist.

What you can learn from your toxic relationships & friendships (if you’re ever able to escape them)

People, they’re everywhere.

And dear God, we must (somehow) find a way to live with them.  Being a social species means finding variation through the people we share our human reality with, but it is not void of it’s challenges. Relationships can be enriching and enlightening and they can also make you wish you had never lived.

Why our fear cripples us and the thrill of change

man carrying suitcase on a journey

What does one do with their underlying fear?

Some chose to hide it under makeup and fabulous clothing. Others through allowing their work to become their life. Some chose to live the way society has shown them prior, their values fed on plastic spoons by main stream media and nuclear family TV. Things like college, a spouse, a child, and a mortgage all supposedly confirming that they are on the Right Path. Some of us zombie-gaze into the computer screen well into the wee hours of the night to find ourselves in the morning with more than just bags under our eyes. The questions finally begin to surface as the sun breaks through the blinds or perhaps at the sound of a very irritating alarm clock: “Why do I do this to myself?” and “What the hell am I doing with my life?” Some of us take drugs or shoot them up, some swallow insane amounts of food until they reach nausea. You know, anything to distract us from what’s really going on. Some feel driven mad enough (some call it inspiration) to transform these feelings and turn them into art in hopes that the pain has all been worth something. It had to mean Something. But even paintings that hang proudly from their walls and grand pieces of artwork or literature are not indicative that we have shed this emotion, or healed the burden it has created.
